10/12/13 Elk Herd Location Map & Report

A good crowd braved morning rain today and saw quite a few elk in the Ponca fields. Little Tine and his harem wandered around the fields all morning bugling.  There were a few bulls bugling and viewing was extended because of the rain.  There are a lot of bull elk now around the Ponca area.

Elsewhere in the valley there were only stragglers.  I expect this to change now that haying is completed in the Smith Creek field.  That field is traditionally strong and this year should be no different after the elk determine it is safe again.  Check there on every visit to the valley.

There are a lot of elk watchers now. Remember to drive slowly and keep your eyes on the road. There are a lot of kids who might dart in front of your car. There is a need for traffic enforcement to ticket the occasional speeders who drive at highway speed as though there were no hazards be they elk or people. Be alert to these occasional reckless drivers, don't be a victim.  Let's hope there are no incidents.
